Grain demand pushes prices higher

Demand for Australian grains continued to improve through last week with 40 buyers pushing prices up to meet grower sell targets and purchase grain through CGX.

In addition to the 40 buyers who managed to purchase grain through Clear Grain Exchange, there were another 58 buyers searching for OFFERS on the screens.

Buyers made a total of 4,744 searches for grain offered for sale last week!

The improved demand coincides with stronger international grain futures and buyers better understanding the shape of the Australian crop as harvest approaches.

Chicago Board of Trade wheat futures hit 4 month highs last week as poor weather conditions in Russia and an escalation of the Ukraine/Russia conflict is seeing some nervousness over supply from the region.

All wheat grades from milling to feed were sought after last week with 24 buyers purchasing 13 wheat grades around the country making up 63% of all grain traded.

16 buyers purchased barley grades with feed barley trading $324/t track Port Adelaide, $308/t track Melbourne/Geelong, $300/t track Port Kembla and $310/t FIS Kwinana as examples. Some malt barley grades continued to attract better prices than feed.

GM and non-GM canola grades were purchased by 10 buyers last week with more searching with non-GM trading $750/t FIS Kwinana and $724/t track Melbourne + oil bonifications as examples.

Other commodities were also attracting demand with lentil, lupins and peas trading.

Grain stored on-farm is also sought after by buyers with various grades of wheat, barley, maize, and lupins trading across central NSW, the Riverina and Mallee areas of NSW and Victoria, and in Western Australia.

Growers offering grain ahead of harvest

Many growers are currently thinking about their cashflow needs through harvest and are OFFERING grain for sale now, ahead of harvest, at their target prices to sell grain and cover harvest cashflow.

It means they're better able to stand aside from the market if prices push lower during the harvest months.

Canola, feed barley, and major wheat grades such as ASW1 and APW1 are the 24/25 season grades growers are most interested in offering for sale.

Offering 24/25 season grain now, shows buyers the price growers want, when growers are not under cashflow pressure to sell. If your grain is not on offer, it can't sell at the price you want.

By OFFERING your grain for sale at the price you believe it's worth, or the price you want for it, on CGX (warehoused grain) or igrain (on-farm grain), every buyer in the market can see it and try to buy it.

This creates demand for your grain and often it will sell at prices you didn't think were available at the time.

It's free to have your grain on offer and you can edit or cancel your offer at anytime before it trades. Plus you're anonymous and protected by best-in-class contract settlement if your grain sells.

There is no downside - only upside!
