Feed demand pushing prices higher

Demand for feed grains and oilseeds appears to be underpinning grain values currently.

Improving corn prices are pulling global wheat prices higher as feeders look to use more wheat in their rations, this is also flowing into barley.

Feed barley grades traded in volume through Clear Grain Exchange (CGX) last week making up 28% of all grains traded.

Malt grades that traded didn't pick up much of a premium to the feed grades indicating the demand for feed being the major price driver currently.

20 different buyer businesses purchased barley through CGX last week with more searching for barley listed for sale.

In the wheat job, ASW1 and the like plus off-spec grades were sought after by buyers confirming the interest in this quality wheat for feed purposes.

33 buyers purchased 20 grades of wheat through last week with more buyers searching for wheat offered for sale indicating all grades were being considered for purchase by buyers.

Price spreads between wheat grades have also closed up with prices of lower grades improving compared to the milling grades.

Stock feed wheat traded $8/t below ASW1 in Melbourne for example, and $10/t below ASW1 in Port Kembla. Feed wheat traded $9/t below AWW1 in Kwinana.

Canola values also appear to be supported on the whole, despite many published bids seemingly falling recently. Some traded prices on CGX for reference include Kwinana CAN1 trading $905/t + oil bonifications, well above published bid prices.

Faba beans, oats and lupins were also trading well. Please refer to the tables below providing a summary of prices traded through CGX last week, or better yet, login to your online CGX account to search and view all prices.
